Taste and smell are usually discussed only when they are lost. This report begins from a different premise: that these senses shape daily life for nearly everyone — and that we have barely begun to measure them.

Executive Summary

A population for whom the senses are deeply personal — and largely invisible to the systems meant to care for them.

The COVID-19 pandemic introduced millions of people to something individuals with sensory disorders have long understood: taste and smell influence far more than flavor. They shape memory and emotion. They guide what we eat. They affect safety, relationships, identity, and the texture of an ordinary day. And yet they remain among the least measured dimensions of human health.

To understand how these senses show up in daily life, the World Taste & Smell Association surveyed 510 adults living in the United States about their sensory experiences, emotional associations, memories, quality of life, and attitudes toward taste and smell. What people described was not a niche clinical concern. It was a sense woven through the most human parts of their lives — often quietly, and almost always unrecorded.

A note on what this is, and is not. This is a descriptive snapshot of a diverse but self-selected group of adults, not a nationally representative study. It does not estimate prevalence for the U.S. population, and it does not establish cause and effect. What it does is map a landscape — and surface questions worth taking seriously.

Methods & Sample

Who we heard from, and how to read these numbers.

Between 2025 and 2026, 510 adults residing in the United States completed an online survey covering sensory perception, emotional and memory associations, quality of life, and attitudes toward taste and smell. All respondents provided informed consent under oversight from Sterling IRB; data were anonymized prior to analysis.

Throughout this report we use a valid-response base: each percentage is calculated only among people who answered that specific question, and we report the item-level sample size (n) alongside it. Because some questions were skipped, n varies by item — typically between 427 and 492 of the 510 participants.

01Memory & Smell

For most people, smell is a door into their own past — including rooms they'd forgotten were there.

Nine in ten respondents told us a scent had brought back a special personal memory. More striking, three in four said a scent had recovered a memory they had completely forgotten — surfacing experiences they could not otherwise reach.

This is consistent with decades of neuroscience on the unusually direct wiring between the olfactory system and the brain's memory and emotion centers. In our data the effect was nearly universal — and barely dented by sensory disorder. Among respondents reporting no clinical smell or taste condition at all, 95.5% still described a scent unlocking a personal memory.

For many, smell was not simply an input. It was a retrieval mechanism for autobiography — a way back into who they have been.

02Emotion & Mood

More than half say scent moves their mood — placing smell inside the emotional life, not beside it.

When we asked whether scents can change their mood, 51.9% agreed. A similar share — 53.9% — said scents stir emotions in them frequently or constantly. And nearly four in ten said another person's scent can shift how they feel.

These patterns line up with a growing literature connecting olfaction to emotional regulation and affective memory. They also raise a public-health question worth sitting with: if smell shapes emotional state for half of this group, should sensory experience be part of how we talk about mental and emotional wellness at all?

03Quality of Life & the Continuum

Sensory health isn't a switch that's on or off. It's a spectrum — and people live all along it.

Half of respondents said their quality of life is affected by their sense of smell; six in ten said the same of taste. Two in three told us aroma is important to how they experience food. Smell, often treated as a secondary sense, turns out to be load-bearing.

And the impact does not stop at the clinic door. Among people who said they had never experienced any smell or taste loss, 50.3% still reported that their sense of smell affects their quality of life. Meaningful variation exists well inside the range we'd call "normal" — which is exactly what a continuum looks like.

04Context, Not Headline

A sample shaped by the pandemic — and a reminder of how common sensory disruption has quietly become.

This is not a random slice of America: 78% of respondents had tested positive for COVID-19, which is part of why so many are attuned to these senses. We treat that as context, not as prevalence. Within it, the scale of disruption is hard to ignore — among those who'd had COVID, roughly half reported some loss of smell, taste, or both.

05Scent & Connection

Smell is also social. It carries the people we love.

Nearly half of respondents said they can recognize someone close to them — a partner, a child, a pet — by scent alone. More than four in ten said they find comfort in the smell of a loved one's belongings.

These are not marginal experiences. They are the quiet infrastructure of attachment, and they suggest that losing smell can mean losing a thread of connection, not just of flavor.

Whatever the science ultimately concludes, the public has already made up its mind that scent matters to wellbeing. And the curiosity is there to meet it: 51.6% told us they want to learn more about the world of taste and smell.

That combination — near-universal belief plus broad appetite — is a rare opening for education, research, and care to step into.

Discussion

We measure blood pressure, cholesterol, and glucose as a matter of routine. We almost never measure the senses that decide what — and whether — we want to eat.

The findings here don't prove causation, and they aren't a prevalence estimate for the country. We want to be careful about that. But read together, they point somewhere specific: taste and smell are not operating at the margins of human experience. For this group, they are part of the machinery through which people experience food, memory, emotion, safety, and one another.

Two patterns feel especially worth carrying forward. First, the impact of these senses extends well beyond people with a diagnosed disorder — quality of life, memory, and mood were shaped by smell even among those reporting no loss at all. Second, responses spread across a full spectrum rather than splitting into "healthy" and "impaired." Both observations argue for treating sensory health as a continuous, measurable dimension of wellbeing — something to track over a lifetime, not only to diagnose after it breaks.

As healthcare moves toward prevention, personalization, and quality-of-life outcomes, that framing has practical consequences: what gets measured gets managed, funded, and studied. Right now, sensory health is largely none of those things.

Conclusion

The question is no longer whether taste and smell matter.

Public health has long focused on what is easy to see and simple to measure. Taste and smell remind us that some of the most influential parts of human health are neither.

The question is whether our healthcare, research, and public-health systems have been paying enough attention. We think this is a good moment to start.
